    The Engineering Manager is an experienced software craftsperson who exhibits the principles and practices of Lean-Agile leadership as described by the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe). This manager is someone who has chosen to take the “management” career path in software development (versus the architecture path). The Manager has personal responsibility for coaching, career development, and technical excellence of direct reports, takes responsibility for eliminating impediments, and actively evolves the system in which all knowledge workers operate. They have accountability for value delivery as well.

    • Build and continually improve highly functional teams
    • Lead and encourage positive team morale
    • Ensure, clear obstacles, and coach teams to meet commitments, both at the team level and at the program level
    • Supporting Program Management to build Agile Milestones and Roadmaps, as well as the building plans that enable them
    • Protect teams from distractions and unrelated or unnecessary work
    • Validate software technical implementation details against both standards and best practices as established by the Principal organization, and ensure that teams are constant – both within a team and across them – on these aspects of programming
    • Provide expertise and other resources (as necessary) for teams and ARTs to successfully execute the Vision, Objectives, and roadmap
    • Assist the RTE with PI Planning readiness and pre- and post- PI Planning activities
    • Participate in PI planning, System demo, and Solution Demo
    • Build partnerships with Suppliers, subcontractors, consultants, partners, and internal and external stakeholders
    • Work with Program Management to establish clear content authority
    • Validate Features/Enablers against core set of readiness criteria and Stories/Enablers against INVEST criteria, and work with core content authority to get those items to meet basic requirements
    • Continually assist in aligning teams to the PI objectives and vision
    • Provide freedom and safety so individuals and teams are free to innovate, experiment, and even fail on occasion
    • Encourage fast failures and quick resolution
    • Keep backlogs and information radiators fully visible to all, and ensure that the quality of data entered into ANY tool used for this purpose is up-to-date, high quality, and accurate
    • Instill a value of solving problems through productivity, quality, transparency, openness, and accountability to all teams, individuals, and peers
    • Understand, teach, and/or sponsor technical skills development in support of high-quality code, components, systems, and Solutions
    • Understand, support, and apply Agile Architecture at the team level and assist with its implementation at the Program level

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or other computer engineering, or equivalent experience
    • Experience leading and coaching developers or development teams in an Agile or Lean/Kanban software development environment
    • 10+ years hands-on experience in programming in languages such as java or C#, and web technologies such as javascript, html, and css
    • 5 Years as a development manager, software architect, technical lead, or similar technical and personnel management role
    • Experience with Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) and backlog management tools such as Microsoft Team Foundation Server, VersionOne, Rally, JIRA, or similar
    • Good skills and knowledge of servant leadership, coaching, facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, continual improvement, empowerment, and increasing transparency
    • Understanding of software design methodologies and patterns
    • Ability to interact with end users and non-technical teams
    • Possess excellent analytical, problem solving, verbal and written communication skills
    • Preference for co-location with managed teams
